Work Permits
All students who are under 18 and have not graduated from high school must have a valid work permit to be legally employed. Students must be academically eligible and be attending school regularly to be eligible for a work permit. Minors may only work during specific hours of the day. Students who are ages 16 - 17 When school is in session: a 16-17 year-old is permitted to work up to 48 hours a week; 4 hours on school days; and 8 hours on nonschool days and days preceding a nonschool day. Students in Work Experience Education may be permitted to work a maximum of 8 hours on a school day with permission. Generally may not work during school hours except in Work Experience program. When school is not in session: daily maximum 8 hours, weekly maximum 48 hours. Student can work between 5am and 10pm. May work until 12:30 am on days preceding non school days or Work Experience students may be authorized to work until 12:30 am any day with specified written permission. Students who are 15 and under When school is in session; daily maximum 3 hours, weekly maximum 18 hours, except 23 hours if student is in Work Experience program. Generally may not work during school hours except in Work Experience program. When school is not in session; daily maximum 8 hours, weekly maximum 40 hours. Student can work between 7am and 7pm except that from June 1 to Labor Day it may exceed to 9pm. |
Work Permits
Students must complete the work permit application. The school must authorize the permit. The student then takes the completed work permit to their employer. |
